The Cabin in the Woods: Horror turned Hilarious

The Cabin in the Woods. Oh man. What can I say about this movie. The movie was written by Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard. It's about five young adults going off to camp at one of their cousins cabin. They think they're in for a fun filled night of drinking and fornication, but instead spend the last night of their young lives battling it out with the dark forces of evil.

The movie stars Chris Hemsworth (i.e. Bald Thor), Anna Hutchinson, Kristin Connolly  and Jesse Williams. They play the roles of the unwary young adults walking right to their doom. They consist of the usual group of kids.  The jock, the braniac, the cheerleader, the virginal friend of the cheerleader, and the burnout.

They decide to play truth or dare and right in the middle of the game a gust of wind blows the basement door open. They, of course, get the BA-RILLIANT idea to make Dana (The "virginal one") hide down there for a few minutes. She sees something scary and starts to scream, convincing the others to come down to help her. They end up goofing around and fiddling with stuff in the basement. Little do they know that each item in the basement summons a supernatural being that will come and kill them. It's all part of some grand scheme to keep the world from ending, put on by a secret corporation.

The special effects were spot on. From the zombies, sugar plum fairy, and the unicorn, to all the other monsters there, they all looked sickeningly real except for one. (The mermaid. It was...oh god. So terrible.)

The lighting was dark for most of the movie, except for the scenes in the surveillance room where employees of the company watched the goings on of their little scheme. During one scene called "The Purge", the lighting goes dark again and fast paced manic music sets in, giving one the feeling that the crap has just hit the fan.

By way of acting and 87% of the CG this movie was hilarious. The acting was terrible but it compensated for the gore. A little sweet for your bitter if you will. I loved this movie and woud reccomend it to anyone who loves a good scare and a laugh and doesn't mind seeing Unicorns stab a man through the stomach.
